Yes, ChatGPT works in Fiji. There is no restriction, no VPN needed, and no special setup. You can use the free version or the paid version from Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, or an island resort with a decent connection, on the same terms as anyone in Sydney or San Francisco. Thousands of Fijians already use it every day.
The more useful question, and the one I get asked constantly by Fiji business owners, is what ChatGPT is actually good for in a business, and where it quietly lets you down. After building AI systems for Fiji businesses since 2022, here is my honest answer.
What ChatGPT does brilliantly for a Fiji business
Writing, rewriting, and translating. Product descriptions, Facebook post captions, email replies, quotes, job ads, tender responses. If your business writes anything in English, ChatGPT will draft it faster than any staff member, and it handles the polishing that turns a rough note into a professional message. It can also translate between English and many languages for your international customers, though its Fijian and Fiji Hindi are far from perfect, so have a human check anything important.
Thinking through decisions. Pricing a new service, comparing two suppliers, planning a promotion for a slow season, writing a simple business plan for a bank or a grant application. ChatGPT is a strong thinking partner that never gets tired of your questions. The quality of what you get depends almost entirely on how much context you give it about your business.
Learning new skills. This is the most underrated use in Fiji. ChatGPT will patiently teach you spreadsheets, basic accounting concepts, marketing fundamentals, or how to use another software tool, at whatever pace you need, for free. For a small business owner who cannot afford a consultant for every question, that matters. If you want structured learning instead, we keep a list of free AI courses for Fiji on this site.
Where ChatGPT falls short for a business
It does not answer your customers. This is the big one. ChatGPT is a tool you sit down and use. It does not sit on your Facebook page or website at 2am answering "how much is the 200Ah battery?" while you sleep. When business owners tell me they want ChatGPT to handle their customer messages, what they actually want is an AI chatbot: a system trained on your products, prices, and policies, connected to your Messenger and website, working around the clock. That is a different thing, and it is what we build at Limitless Marketing. You can read how that works in our AI chatbot service overview.
It does not know your business. Out of the box, ChatGPT knows nothing about your stock, your prices, or your delivery areas, and it will confidently guess if you let it. Anything customer-facing needs your real information behind it, kept up to date.
It can be confidently wrong. ChatGPT sometimes invents facts, and it does so in perfect English. For anything involving Fiji law, tax, FNPF, immigration, or medical advice, treat it as a starting point for questions, never as the final answer. Verify with the actual authority.
Your data goes overseas. For most everyday business use this is fine, but if you handle sensitive customer information, be thoughtful about what you paste in, and use the settings that stop your conversations being used for training.
ChatGPT vs an AI chatbot for your business: which do you need?
A simple rule from someone who builds both kinds of systems:
- If the work is you producing something, writing, planning, learning, analysing, use ChatGPT directly. It costs nothing or about US$20 a month, and the skill of writing good prompts pays off forever.
- If the work is your business responding to people, customer questions, bookings, lead capture, follow-ups, you need an AI system built for that job: an AI chatbot connected to your channels, trained on your business, with a human handover for the hard cases. That is what Avaia pioneered in Fiji in 2022, and what we now build on modern platforms for businesses across the country, in tourism, retail, automotive, and services.
Most Fiji businesses that get serious about AI end up with both: staff using ChatGPT-style tools to work faster, and an AI system out front handling customers. The two together are how a five-person business starts operating like a twenty-person one. How to start this week
1. Open chatgpt.com, make a free account, and give it a real task from your business today, not a test question. Paste in a customer complaint and ask for three reply options in a warm, professional tone.
2. When you write a prompt, give it context: what your business is, who the message is for, and what outcome you want. Context is the difference between generic and genuinely useful.
3. When you find yourself wishing it could talk to your customers directly, that is the moment to look at a proper AI chatbot. Talk to us and we will tell you honestly whether your business is ready for one.
AI in Fiji is not coming, it is here. ChatGPT is the easiest first step, and for many businesses the right second step is a system that works while you sleep.
